We support ethnically diverse families in Edinburgh
Student Training
Since its inception MCFB has always combined service delivery with student learning and valued the very positive contributions students have made to the development of the agency. Many of our projects were developed through the work of students with their involvement in both pilot projects and funding requests. We have developed a strong reputation for providing high quality and diverse learning opportunities for social work students from academic institutions across Scotland. Opportunities are also available for placements within other voluntary sector agencies through the MCFB network. The emphasis is on the creation of a positive learning environment that enables students to become confident and skilled practitioners. In the past (2006 and 2007) MCFB has been a finalist in the Care Accolades awards under the category of developing innovative practice learning.
MCFB has developed a strong reputation for providing high quality and diverse learning opportunities for social work students from academic institutions across Scotland. The emphasis is on the creation of a positive learning environment that enables students to become confident and skilled practitioners. We are one of the few agencies that can provide in-depth opportunities for students to work cross-culturally with children and families. We specialise in equipping students with the skills and knowledge to communicate and work effectively with children. All students will have the experience of co-facilitating group work for children.
Why Us?
Why You?
We offer placements to social work students from all the major programmes in Scotland as well as abroad. Our placements are suitable for students at all stages of their training. We carefully match students to the available learning opportunities based on a person-centered approach. Students are often placed in particular projects within MCFB so that they develop an in depth knowledge of the workings of a project. For students coming to MCFB we are looking for an openness to new learning ; a commitment to making a difference to the lives of ethnically diverse children and families and a willingness to explore and reflect on your values. We want to make your placement a memorable and valuable learning experience that will stay with you throughout your professional career.

“I have gained a much higher awareness of cultural competence as a social worker and this has led me to reflect upon my practice a great deal more. The benefit of this has been that I have developed a finer, more attuned knowledge of anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice.”
“It is refreshing to see an organization so dedicated to working with BME and Scottish families. I have felt that MCFB works very hard towards the integration of children and families into the system, while also working very hard towards advocating idea of inclusion for families with different cultures and backgrounds in the Scottish community.”
“Prior to this placement, I did not realise the amount of racism that families and their children continue to face and the effects that this can have on many aspects of their lives, for example, at school.”
“The power and importance of therapeutic play will forever remind me of MCFB and that social work is not about ticking boxes and reaching outcomes but really connecting with families to improve their well-being.”
